Materials

Wooden lawn edging can be manufactured from a variety of timbers including pine, cedar, and redwood; untreated options are suitable for the green gardener while pressure-treated timber options will ensure durability and prevent rot.

Installation and Maintenance

The first thing you need to do is mark out where the edging needs to go with pegs and a string line. Clear everything away from the area and dig a trench about half the width of the timber and check that it’s level. Measure the area and cut the timber to length. Place the timber in the trench and secure with stakes, using a mallet to firm and level. Backfill the trench and compact the soil to ensure the edging stays firmly in place.
